A councillor has highlighted comments from the party’s leadership on working from home, cutting costs and the future of Diversity, Equality and Inclusion roles.

Labour politicians have warned council staff to “join a union” after Reform UK took control of the authority.

Hyndburn Council Labour business and growth spokesman Scott Brereton’s call came after Reform national leader Nigel Farage said home-workers and people involved in diversity, equality and inclusion (DEI) were in the party’s sights.

Farage spoke after his party took control of Lancashire County Council on 1 May.

Brereton said: “Nigel Farage has made it clear the sort of changes he wants Reform-led councils to make, saying ‘Work from home? Forget it. If you are a DEI officer, I suggest you look for another job’.”

Brereton added: “It’s outrageous that immediately they’re vowing to take away family-friendly and flexible working practices, as well as equality, diversity and inclusion initiatives.

“They seem to have a view that people who work from home are lazy, when in reality it helps people work more effectively and saves councils money.”

Stephen Atkinson defected from the Conservatives to Reform UK

A The Lancashire Association of Trades Union Councils spokesperson said organisations like Reform UK sought to divide workforces.

“A few weeks ago, Reform MPs voted against banning exploitative zero-hours contracts. They voted against day-one access to sick pay. They are not on the side of working people,” a spokesman said.

But Stephen Atkinson, who had been Conservative leader of Ribble Valley Council but is now tipped to become the Reform UK leader of the county council, said there was nothing “backward” or “scandalous” about opposing DEI initiatives.

“Not only do we reject DEI, we completely refuse to adhere to it.

“DEI, by its nature, is discriminatory and prejudiced.

“Reform UK will ensure that hiring practices are based solely on performance and merit—not on the colour of your skin or your personal agenda.”
