Part of a Grade II* listed former Victorian church has collapsed on to a street in a West Yorkshire town.

Police were called to reports of a building collapse on Bradford Road in Cleckheaton at about 10:00 BST, which they attended alongside fire and rescue crews. No-one was injured in the incident, a police spokesperson said.

Images shared on social media showed large blocks of broken stone strewn on the pavement at the bottom of the steps outside The Monal wedding venue, with parts of the building’s facade missing.

The Monal was contacted by the BBC, but a spokesperson declined to comment.

Bradford Road remained closed on Saturday afternoon, with police confirming Kirklees Highways was managing the road closure.

The grand stone building now occupied by The Monal was formerly Aakash, believed to be one of Britain’s biggest Indian restaurants.

According to Historic England, the building was originally constructed as a United Reformed Church by Lockwood and Mawson of Bradford between 1857 and 1859.

The two-storey former Providence Place church was first listed in 1982.
