A man has appeared in court charged with the murder of a woman in Plymouth.
Paul Butler, 53, of Stangray Avenue, appeared at Plymouth Magistrates Court, charged with the murder of university lecturer Claire Chick.
The 48-year-old was found seriously injured in West Hoe Road on Wednesday and later died in hospital.
Mr Butler was remanded in custody, and is due to appear at Plymouth Crown on Tuesday and on Friday 3 March.
He spoke only to confirm his name, address and date of birth.
He was wearing a custody-issued grey tracksuit.
Magistrate District Judge Stuart Smith said he wanted to express his condolences to the family of Claire Chick – who were in the public gallery.
“This must be an incredibly difficult time,” he said.
“The pain, anger and loss you are suffering is unimaginable.”
